Canal Option 2
Advantages of building a facility at the north entrance of the system begin with flexibility. Growth is possible in several directions starting with the area in and around Quackenbush Square. There is even the potential of taking the system northward along the path of the original Erie Canal. Most of the land is presently under utilized with extremely limited commercial and residential prospects. A marina and canal system at this site offers numerous possibilities for future development.
On the negative side, this location is somewhat removed from the center of town. Another disadvantage is the freight railway lines to the Port of Albany, which are presently used by a about 6 trains per day. Marine access to the site would be possible only if an operable railroad bridge of either a swing of lift design were provided.
